Javier Silva Meinel
Born in 1949 in Lima, Peru. Lives and works in Lima.
Javier Silva Meinel was born in 1949 in Lima, where he currently lives and works, represented by the Younique Gallery.
Javier Silva Meinel is one of the major figures in Peruvian and Latin American photography. His work dialogues with the most important photographers of his generation, such as Graciela Iturbide, Juan Carlos Alom, Paz Errázuriz or Fernell Franco.
He decided to dedicate himself to photography in the mid-1970s. Associated with the movement that was built around the now legendary Fotogalería Essaie, founded in Lima by Fernando La Rosa in 1977, he began his career as a photographer.
For more than fifty years, he has been traveling through Peru and building a work in black and white of great intensity, where portraits, landscapes and rituals question the links between human, territory and sacred. Working with the silver square format as a geometrically balanced space, he transforms reality into spiritual matter. Nourished by the Andean cosmovision and a complicit intimacy with the subjects he photographs, his work full of strangeness goes beyond the visible to open a threshold towards the invisible.
Javier Silva Meinel's photographs are part of many institutional collections such as the Museo de Arte de Lima (Mali), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) in Lima, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Brooklyn Museum, the Phoenix Museum, the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, the BnF as well as many private collections in Peru, the United States and Europe.
