For our second participation in Paris Photo, Curiosa sector, we will present works from the project "Ipáamamu - Histoires de Wawaim", led by Éléonore Lubna and Louis Matton. "Ipáamamu - Histoires de Wawaim" was presented in 2022 at the Centre Photographique d'Ile-de-France, EAC Les Roches and the Galerie Younique. In June 2023, the project was exhibited at the Fotofestiwal in Lodz (Poland).
In 1979, in the region of Alto Marañón (Peru), the native community of Wawaim was opposed to the filming on its lands of the feature film "Fitzcarraldo" by Werner Herzog (1982). The conflict resulted in a reaffirmation of the rights of the native populations, accelerating the emergence of new forms of collective organizations hitherto unheard of in the Peruvian Amazon.
Forty years later, the collective project "Ipáamamu - Histoires de Wawaim", realized within the community of Wawaim, reflects the long struggle of the Awajún for self-determination. In a dialogue between past and present and eager to witness the news of the Awajún Native Communities, Eléonore Lubna and Louis Matton bring to life the events through the stories of those who lived them, archives, photographs and ceramics.
On the occasion of Paris Photo 2023, Eléonore Lubna and Louis Matton will present for the first time, three works combining photography and archive.
A book will be published in 2024 by L'éditeur du dimanche (Paris, France) and Spector Books (Leipzig, Germany).
